Professional vocal coach, voice expert
Who am I ? Well, broadly speaking…human. I mean, I suppose I am !
My name is Kameliya Afshari, and I’m a singer, actress and voice coach. I was born on the 10th of Febuary, 1994 in Lille.
From le Théâtre des Champs-Elysées to the international…
I began when I was 6 in a music academy. Thanks to the Chœur Maîtrisien of the Wasquehal Conservatoire, I gained professional experience very quickly : at 15 years old, I was propelled right up to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, singing J. S. Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion under the direction of Jean-Claude Malgoire. At 16, I sang « la Marseillaise and le Chant des Partisans » with The French Army Choir, during the 14th of July Parade on the Champs-Elysées.
I didn’t sing just in France, we also did a Choir’s tour in Poland and Portugal.
Speeches in front of hundreds of people since 10 years old…
At around 10, I was elected to the Children City Council in the neighborhood where I grew up, Saint-Maurice
Pellevoisin in Lille. The Council had meetings once a month during which we built some projects for the town such as : cleaning the city, selling our own portrait postcards by using sign language for UNICEF, recycling old objects into
new ones to sell them for the benefit of Les Papillons Blancs…
And to communicate about these developments, I used to speak in public for : journalist’s interviews, submitting new projects to the big annual meeting at Lille’s Town Hall where the Children’s Council held joint meetings with the
Mayor and Town Councillors, and all the City Councils of Lille.
A bilingual actress…
At the same time, I took acting lessons : I played many roles in short dramas and improvisation in French as well as in English. (That’s why I can teach you singing in English too !)
During an internship at the Le Prato theatre, I discovered all the lines of work in the theatre trade, from staging to the communications side of a show
From opera to jazz, my voice is a real instrument…
At 16, I was finally able to take opera singing lessons (hard to start before because the voice is not mature/ready) in Wasquehal, Lille and Roubaix Conservatoires.
It allowed me to reach a wide range of repertoire : From Mozart’s Italian arias to operettas, from Poulenc’s French melodies to Schumann’s lieder, from West side Story to Baroque singing.
So if you want to sing in other languages than English, I’m your woman ! I mean…in a manner of speaking, of course !
At 21, I achieved a Bachelor in Musicology. That’s where I discovered my jazzy voice by doing some gigs with some university friends. So I started to give concerts, accompanied by a pianist, with a lyrical-jazz repertoire, in different venues such as : the Spotlight in Lille, the Proust Festival, art galleries (including the PPGM in Roubaix).
The fact that I’ve expanded my voice to other musical repertoires allows me to sing everything I want now : rock, pop, soul, jazz, etc…
My dream was to make a good career in London. So after my graduation, I left France. In London, I had the
opportunity to sing at several prestigious venues including The Ivy Club in Leicester Square, and the Millennium Hotel.
I met beautiful people (or less pretty. But what is beauty… ? Subjective ! Bravo, I can see you’re following !)
Then one by one, the idea of a new show combining music and acting was born in my mind.
At 24, I played my first show in 800 seats-theatres…
This is when I wrote, produced and acted in Back In Time, for the first time in 2016, at the Kino in Lille. After seeing how the audience really enjoyed the show, I decided to stay in France to refine and reshape my show.
Then I conquered the public of the Northern France in 2018, playing in 800 seats-theatres like the Théâtre Municipal Raymond Devos in Tourcoing, or The Le Pacbo in Orchies. I also played the show in smaller venues like l’Antre 2 in Lille.
How I became a professional vocal coach in parallel…
Obviously, to build a show takes time and money. So I needed to have a paying job at the same time. I tried many things : hostess for major events, saleswoman in luxury boutiques, waitress, babysitter, English teacher… Anything to cover the costs of my other life !
Strangely, the fact that I was standing all day long on high heels, to convince strangers to buy a stinky perfume wasn’t very pleasant.
So I had to find a job which gives me as much energy and motivation as I have when I’m on stage.
The idea of helping people to sing by transmetting my knowledge and skills was cristal clear. But progressively, I realized that almost all of my students could neither stand straight nor breathe, despite the fact that they are the basics of life.
So I decided to combine my 2 careers as a singer and voice coach into one, because educating is very much like an artist’s job : we transmit messages, we display emotions. Sometimes it makes you think, sometimes it just feels good.
The only difference from being on stage is that I can interact with people individually, or in smaller groups in a personalised way.
So I created my own enterprise where I help people to make optimal use of their voice’s capacities
By using their new-found singing voice and also to impress audiences with their spoken voice. I teach my clients to unwind mentally and and help them build their self-esteem.
I can do these things in groups or individually.
I regularly assist companies and schools (Maestris, Réactif Activités, Glaydz…), with training workshops and/or speak to their staff about the influence the voice has on one’s self-confidence.
